Addition of DMDS to Alkene Double Bond

Hi,

There is simple reaction adding DMDS to a carbon-carbon double bond. To the reaction mixtures is added a iodine solution. Can't figure out for what reason  >:(

What is Iodine (I2)? Is it a halide? What happens when you react a halide with an alkene?
