Formula of a Hydrate
« on: September 30, 2009, 02:15:36 PM »
Suppose you want to know the formula of a hydrate of barium thiocyanate. If you heat 1.089 g of the
hydrate until all of the water is vaporized, the mass of anhydrous Ba(SCN)2 is 0.898 g. What is the formula
of the hydrate, i.e. what is the value of x in Ba(SCN)2.xH2O? (The formula weight of anhydrous barium
thiocyanate is 253.49 g/mol)

Not sure where I'd start on a problem like this?

How many moles of anhydrous salt are left? How many moles of water were lost? What is their ratio?
