easy redox reactions...
« on: October 08, 2009, 02:00:53 AM »
Hi, I understand that these are probably easy questions, but I have attempted them and do not understand how to work them out. Any help will be great, thanks  :)

In the equation below, which atoms are being oxidised and reduced?
4FeS(s) + 11O2(g) :rarrow: 2Fe2O3(s)+8SO2(g)
I attempted it and got 2 atoms being oxidised and that cannot be right.   ???

What is the oxidation and reduction half equation for:
4FeS2(s)+14O2(g)+4H2O(l) :rarrow: 4Fe4+(aq)+8SO42-(aq)+8H+(aq)
I'm unsure about how to write the oxidation half equation.  ???

thanks :)

Nothig wrong with more than one atom being oxidised in the same reaction.

FeS2 contains Fe(II) and S22-, it is so called persulfide.
