Benzyl Amide and Benzamide
« on: October 13, 2009, 04:43:40 PM »
Hi guys, I had a true or false on my assignment. The question was if Benzyl Amide and Benzamide the same if you were draw out their diagrams. I believe in both cases a benzene ring should be drawn with a NH2 attached to the number 1 carbon of the benzene.

Did I get it right or is there a flaw in my drawing?

How does the amide group look like? How does the benzyl group look like?

I drew 6 carbons with a circle inside denoting it to be a benzene ring. On the very top carbon, I drew a carbon coming off of it. This carbon had a NH2 and a Oxygen (2bonds coming off of it).

In an attachment, there are proper structures. The first one is benzamide and the second - benzyl amide.
