Enthalpy Question!!!
« on: October 19, 2009, 07:05:00 PM »
Zinc dissolves in acid according to balanced reaction

Zn(s) + 2H+(aq) --> Zn^2+ (aq) + H_2 (g)

A sample of zinc is placed in an ice calorimeter. If 0.0657 g of zinc causes a decrease of 0.109 mL in the ice/water olume of the calorimeter, what is the enthalpy change, per mole of zinc, for the above reaction per mole of zinc.

Any idea how to do this question? It confuses me.

When ice melts volume of the water/icr mixture goes down. You will need densities of ice and water to calculate how much ice melted - then it is a simple heat balance.
