Reaction of a Mercaptan with Acetic Anhydride
« on: October 25, 2009, 11:05:26 AM »
I was preparing Benzimidazole sulfonyl sulfide derivatives ... the reaction was successful by dissolving the benzene sulfonyl chloride in a neutral solvent i.e 1,4-Dioxane. and pyridine followed by addition of 2-mercapto benzimidazole.

R-SH + Cl.SO2-Ar-NHCOCH3 ----> R-S-SO2-Ar-NHCOCH3

I was thinking of using acetic andhydride and pyridine in combination as a solvent ... but all i got was a sticky black mass as product...

one of my retired professors had said that the mercaptan and acetic anhydride undergo a polymerisation reaction ... is that the reason ? whats the reaction ??
