I just recently discovered that Boric acid was marked as a cancerous, mutagenic or reproductive harmful (CMR) compound by Sigma-Aldrich. Other distributors like VWR and Chiron still consider Boric acid as harmless. Common uses of Boric acid is as a disinfectant in hospitals to prevent infections due to decubitus (I believe it is a 3% solution) and as a food additive. I believe this must be a recent knowledge.

The things we know.

I ain't surprised. Powdered boric acid (pure/concentrated) was always known to be dangerous/cancerous/poisonous/(you name it). It's the very dilute solutions of it makes it "relatively non-toxic". People still use it as a pesticide, not sure about cleaning stuff at hospitals.
and what, food additive?
That I'm surprised about.

Isn't it used in or as an eye wash solution?
If boric acid is toxic, its salts should be as well, which means a lot soaps like borax could be dangerous.
I honestly believe we need more sources on its toxicity though, I highly doubt it is very toxic.

Hm... Makes me think. I've bought boric acid twice from the pharmacy - the first time, it was on the shelves; the second time, I had to ask for it from behind the counter. They were different pharmacies, but...

Any one have any data on its LD50 for humans, mice or some other mammals?
Not roaches...
