Hello!
I was wondering if someone could help me work through this. I have an unknown compound and the only things I know about it are that it is solube in both ethanol and ligroin (a bunch of hexanes), and that it is a yellow powder. As a result of it being soluble in ethanol and ligroin, I went through my list of possible uknowns (included below) and picked out the nonpolar ones, assuming that like-dissolves-like. After this I did an internet search for yellow compounds and narrowed it down to 1,1-diphencylacetone. What does everyone think? I've included my list of possible unknown compounds below:
Nonpolar (?)
1,1-diphenylacetone
benzyhydrol
trans-stilbene
Others:
phenylacetic acid
alpha-mehtyladipic acid
benzil
o-toluic acid
acetanilide
benzoin
2-chlorobenzoic acid
adipic acid
salicyclic acid
3-5-dimethyl benzoic acid
