So my lab is due tommorow at 8am. I've been trying to figure this stuff out since Wednesday, but ti just doesn't add up. I think the product is 1,1,3,3tetraphenylbutene. We added 1,1diphenylethanol to k10 clay (proton donor) and put it in the microwave for 3 minutes.

Anyways, the NMR spectrum seems to show 19 aromatic H's, 1 bromoalkane, ROR, or ROH, an alkyene or iodoalkane, and a tertiary H.... which doesn't make sense!! I don't know what other product it could be, because while an ether might make sense here, it doesn't match up with the mass spec.

We have molecular ions as 360, 345, 238, 269, and 77, which we have to show what fragments apply to what, and i've figured out all of those according to the product i think it is, except for 269.

*delete me*!! I'm stuck:(

Do us the  favor of drawing the structure.
Most Common Suggestions I Make on the Forums.
1. Start by writing a balanced chemical equation.
2. Don't confuse thermodynamic stability with chemical reactivity.

I'm having the same problem for this reaction. The NMR spectrum for 1,1,3,3-tetraphenylbutene looks similar to the one given except that there is no peak at 6.59 and there are doublets at 3.411-3.377 and 3.111-3.077.  Doesn't this correspond to the presence of hydroxy units within my product?  However, the mass spectrum shows the major product as having a mass of 360 (masses identified: 360, 345, 283, 269, 254, 239, 205, 191, 178, 165, 91, 77) of which i took to mean that the molecule reacts with itself and ultimtately loses 2 water molecules.  Also, the C13 NMR shows a cluster of carbons within the 150-147 range (5 in total) separated from the 128-124 cluster indicating a nonsymmetrical phenyl ring I think.  Any tips here?
