There are many ways to dissect a chemical mixture.  But the best method to used depends on the type of materials mixed. 

Having said that, one of the more common methods used is chromatography in one of its many forms.  Fraction distillation and crystallization are other methods.  Can you give any more information on what you are trying to separate?
