States of matter
« on: December 02, 2009, 09:37:52 AM »
Hi! I'm doing a conspect about hydrochloric acid. I need you to help me figure out which products are gases, liquids, solids and aq in these two reactions:
Na2SO3 + 2HCl → 2NaCl + H2O + SO2;
Na2CO3 + 2HCl → 2NaCl + H2O + CO2.
My gueses are:
Na2SO3(aq) + 2HCl(?) → 2NaCl(aq) + H2O(l) + SO2(g);
Na2CO3(aq) + 2HCl(?) → 2NaCl(aq) + H2O(l) + CO2(g).
I'm really unsure about the HCl, cos it can be a gas, a liquid and also aq, depending on if we're talking about the gas or the acid and if the acid, depending on it's concentration it can be a liquid (weak) or a solution (concentrated).

The HCl would be aqueous so it can react with the Na2XO3 which is dissolved in water. Even if you started with HCl gas above your solution it would have to dissolve in the water in order to get at the other reactant.

If the question is really about products then you need to investigate the solubility of SO2 and CO2 in water.

I simply needed to help me decide whether I should write aq, l, g or s right to every Na2XO3, HCl, NaCl, H2O.
