Test for unsaturation
« on: December 06, 2009, 11:29:49 AM »
In the test fr unsaturation in a compound, few mL of the organic compound is to be dissolved in Carbon Tetrachloride before adding bromine water to it. Decolourisation of the bromine indicates unsaturation.
Why is CCl4 required as a solvent for this test?
Will benzaldehyde (or any aldehyde) respond positively to this test?

Carbon tetrachloride allows dissolution of the organic compound, not all organics are liquid.

Do you think benzaldehyde will react with bromine? As to aldehydes in general, it depends on their structure.
