mixture of two alcohol prduces..?
« on: December 08, 2009, 06:12:31 PM »
hi, i was wondering what product would you get by mixing two alcohols.
For example, what are the products that would be produced by the mixture of ethanol and isopropanol.

i know one of them is ethoxyisopropane (ethers) if H2SO4 is used. what other possible products could be formed from this reaction?

thank you.

I have seen in my books that when you mix an alcohol with an acid like H2SO4 the OH group on alcohol will change to H2O which is a good leaving group and then you will see an elimination reaction

Two primary alcohols react with sulfuric acid forming mixture of three ether. Secondary and tertiary alcohols undergo faster elimination of water within their molecules then between molecules hence this method may be used only for lower and primary alcohols
