NaBH4 LiAlH4 reductions and aldehydes
« on: December 11, 2010, 11:30:41 AM »
Can NaBH4 and LiALH4 be used to reduce all aldehydes? i.e. formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, etc

I know LiAlH4 is more reactive, but i can't exactly remember the pros and cons of each. what are they?

Thanks

Yes, NaBH4 and LiAlH4 reduce aldehydes. NaBH4 is more gentle and can be used to selectively reduce aldehydes and ketones in the presence of esters, carboxylates, and amides, while LiAlH4 cannot.
