How many moles are in .09 grams of oxgyen?
« on: February 23, 2010, 09:39:04 PM »
On this note, can you please tell me how to convert from grams to moles?

And then, can you please tell me briefly how to do empirical formulas?

Oxygen or diatomic oxygen?

Regardless what is the molar mass of O (or O2 if the question specified the later)

Er....I guess it's just Oxygen?

I have .09 grams of just Oxygen. How many moles is that? How do I convert?

Molar mass ( look on the periodic table. Thats how many grams are in a mole)

Now if we have the molar mass, and the mass you gave us could'nt we do some math ot get the moles?

(given over molar mass)<- Hint

Oh, so then, does that mean that the molar mass is 16? If the given is .09

Then shouldn't the equation be .09/16 ? Is the answer the amount of moles?

Yes, so if one mol = 16g, xmol = .09

Demensional analysis:
1mol/16g x .09g/xmol = (1x.09)/(16) = the answer (about .005)

Thats your conversion factor 1mol=16g.

Another way is to find the mols per gram of a substance (for O, its 1mol/16 or .0625mols per gram.) Take that "oxygen constant" you found and multiply it by the grams you have (.0625mols per gram times .09 grams equals .005mols)
