Extraction of trimyristin from nutmeg
« on: February 23, 2010, 03:13:12 PM »
What are possible ways to determine whether you lost trimyristin during each step of the experiment.

So here's what I did:

Dissolved  nutmeg with diethyl ether using reflux appartus, separated insoluble impurities, and evaporated the diethyl ether to isolate the trimyristin using distillation apparatus. Added acetone trimyristin solution and cooled in ice bath causing precipitation.

I'm not sure what experiments I could use to determine whether I lost TRI during each step

Do you have authentic trimyristin to compare?

Hmm it says to devise an experiment so i guess you could hypothetically have pure TRI to compare with. I can compare the pure TRI with my sample using TLC, but what does that have to do with determing wheter I lose TRi during each step?

Where is your trimyristin at the end of the experiment? What else do you have?

trimyristin was precipitated at the end. The insoluble impurities of the nutmeg was extracted by filtration earlier.

My last step should have read:Added acetone to solution and cooled in ice bath causing precipitation of trimyristin.

You can run TLC's against anything that's left from the previous steps.
