aqua regia question
« on: March 07, 2010, 01:04:27 PM »
Is it possible to make aqua regia, or nitro-hydrochloric acid, with either an azeotrope of nitric acid or red fuming nitric acid?

I think the red fuming is out actually. Too expensive for too little of a quantity. Is it possible with the azeotrope (65%-68% nitric acid)? If so, what quality of hydrochloric should I get?

Thanks

Well, Conc. Nitric is 68-70% (wiki) red fuming is like 70+ (with additives) nitric (wiki)

Aqua Regia is just a 1:3 ratio of Conc. nitric and HCl. The 65-68%nitric you spoke of would work fine.

...even because HCl is in water solution (more water than acid).  ;)
