Acidity of Carboxylic acids
« on: March 21, 2010, 01:37:18 PM »

Which set of comparisons is correct?

               Compound 1                                                        Compound 2

1 stronger acid than acetic acid             smaller equilibrium constant for hydration than acetone
2 weaker acid than acetic acid               larger equilibrium constant for hydration than acetone
3 stronger acid than acetic acid             larger equilibrium constant for hydration than acetone
4 weaker acid than acetic acid               smaller equilibrium constant for hydration than acetone

I know compound 1 is stronger acid tan acetic acid, but I don't know if compund 2 has a smaller or larger equilibrium constant for hydration than acetone.

What factors do you think will affect the equilibrium in question 2?
