what can be added to a liquid that is colored when wet and dries clear?  I'm looking for something that could be added to a liquid to aid in the application process.

Maybe you can use pH indicators to measure the application.

Hi Darrin,

Did you ever find the chemical/solution you were searching for?

Not really.  I need something like they put in Elmer's glue sticks that is purple when wet and dries clear.  The material I'm working with has a PH of roughly 8.3 and I used Phenolphthalein hoping that it would work but I have not gotten it to work yet.  Any ideas?

Just curious
Do you want it to turn colored again if it gets wet?

The substace is a finish product so it will not get wet again.

Aha -
something that is colored but when exposed to air it turns clear.

I was thinking maybe we could find something that used a 3 step process
apply colored
spay with something that removes the color
seal with another product

that is not what you want

Ideally, it would go on colored and when dry would be clear.  I do not know what they use in the Elmer's glue sticks but they go on purple and turn clear when dry.

I would explore using a polymerized substituted silane.
