Making a reaction change colour over time
« on: April 05, 2010, 08:22:50 AM »
Hello people.

I have this project at my school where I need to find a common problem in everyday life and come up with a solution to it.
I have chosen to work with solving the common problem we all know: You look inside your refrigerator to get some milk. You take it out and start to drink it, only to find out that it is too old!

Now.. I have come up with the following solution:
I want a small transparent canister of some sort glued to the side of the carton. In this should be two chemicals slowly reacting and over time changing colour. So lets say it is green at first and slowly turns red untill the expiration date is up.
This reactin of course needs to be temperatur dependent since milk cannot tolerate to be outside of the refrigerator for very long.

I am by no means a chemist so I have no idea how to really produce something like this.
This is of course where you guys come into the picture.

Can anyone confirm that this would be possible and perhaps have an idea on how to it?

Sincerely
Ruzz42
