Nitric Acid & Sulfuric Acid storage
« on: April 17, 2010, 05:48:39 AM »
So what is the best way to store these? I will keep in the amber glass bottles, however, Im not so sure on what type of cap to use. I cant really find anything useful online, as in something like an acid container. And I know these things are dangerous and the wrong material could lead to trouble.. Although I wont be storing much, safety is still a top priority.

Thanks in advance.

P.S. I have a dead car battery.. cant decide whether to harvest the sulfuric acid from it and grab a few lead plates for an experiment or two later on down the road.

Glass stoppers for acids will work. They don't work for bases.

Glass, or plastic (what I use) with teflon seals on the nitric (it will brittle the plastic over a period of time)

We have old reagent bottles (some labeled directly on the glass, real cool) they seem to be 500ml or less. We are phasing them out tbh, the glass bottles from the provider with plastic lids are safer (a drop won't shoot off the lid, and they are PVC coated so even if the glass breaks, it will still *usually* retain the liquid

Definitely want a heavy walled, plastic coated bottle for storage of these acids.  Car battery acid is only 35% sulfuric acid, so storing that as opposed to concentrated H2SO4 isn't as much of a worry.  Both nitric and sulfuric acids, when concentrated, are dangerous because they are oxidizing acids, and mixing them with even small amounts of organics can lead to violent explosions - so be very careful with how you use and store them.  We had a 55 gallon drum explode when somebody emptied some nitric waste into a waste container that had previously contained cellulose....
