Stability of phenylic group
« on: May 01, 2010, 03:51:57 AM »
In my chemistry textbook i read that phenylic carbocation is more stable than the vinylic carbocation as shown in the two attchments

why is that so...

the phenylic carbocation is resonance stabilized!!!

that empty orbital is sticking out of conjugation with the aromatic pi system, so it is not resonance stabilized.

AM SO SORRY I MEANT THAT NY TEXTBOOK SAYS THAT PHENYLIC IS LESS STABLE THAN VINYLIC...

I thought that phenylic would be more stable due to the resonance...
