Chemistry - Decomposing Bleach?
« on: May 11, 2010, 12:00:27 AM »
I am in need of help of finding a way to decompose bleach (sodium hypochlorite).

I have to design an experiment and have no idea where to start.
Firstly, all we have done is stoichiometry, bonding, energetics, organic chem, periodicity and minimal kinetics and we have this kinetics lab thrust upon us.

What catalyst should I add to decompose bleach?
How can I raise the temperature using standard lab equipment?
What procedure do I use?
How do I measure the rate of the decomposition?
How do I see the reaction occurring?
What other factors affect this decomposition reaction?

Is the formula:
NaOCl -> NaCl + O2 , NaOCl -> NaO + Cl2.. ?

I have absolutely no clue where the logic for this react comes from or which pathway it takes.
Much thanks for your help.
