as far as i know synthesis of reactions involving catalysts have been divided into two groups, one using inorganic catalysts and the other using organic catalysts.
one learns best by teaching

"Designing Organic Syntheses" by Stuart Warren and "The Logic of Chemical Synthesis" by E. J. Corey are good general synthesis books.
