Pyrogallol synthesis
« on: May 25, 2010, 10:38:07 AM »
Hi,

I would need to purify gases and pyrogallol seems to be appropriate to remove oxygen. I found a bottle in the lab but under alkaline conditions it turns immediately into purple, it was kept on air.

I tried to find the reaction in the literature but did not find the product of the reaction between pyrogallol and oxygen. It is gallic acid?

If yes, I would like to remove the carboxylic oxygens as proposen in JACS, 1948, 70, 2605:
"Gallic acid monohydrate (9.4g) in 250mL of methanol was heated at 200C for fourteen hours, the solution evaporated to dryness and the residue recrystallized from benzene to give 6.2g of pyrogallol."

My question is that is it a stainless steal reactor which should be used to achieve the mentioned conditions? Or can it be enough if I heat up the solid gallic acid let's say to 120C in a furnace? (melting point of pyrogallol is 130C)

Thank you

D.
