Simple IUPAC naming help?
« on: May 18, 2010, 09:11:09 PM »
I have to name the compound (CH3CH2)2CHCH2(CH2CH3)CH2C(CH3)3 and I cannot for the life of me figure out how to draw it (which I was trying to do to help me name it). Can anyone help me out?

Alright, I did a little more research, and I decided that it could be 3, 4, 7-trimethyl octane. I'm still a little iffy though. Does that seem right?

Well as i know..
The 2nd parenthesise is for no reason i think.
Thus the structure will be the following:
                                      CH3
  CH3-CH2-CH-CH2-CH2-CH2-C-CH3
                CH2      CH3      CH3
                CH3

Sorry i wasn't able to draw the structure as it was needed..
Though i name this as follows: 6-ethyl-2,2,4-trimethyl octane

I think it is 2,2-dimethyl-3,4-diethylhexane.

I think the correct chemical name is 4,5-Diethyl-2,2-dimethyl-heptane.(as we should select long chain!!!!)

Is this structure is right?
In one place the carbon is having five bonds!!!Pls. correct me if i am wrong.
I have given given the name by ignoring one of the "H" in the five bonded carbon!!!!!

Using the structure given in the OP AC Prabakar is right, one carbon does have too many hydrogens. I drew it out omitting that H and ChemDraw gives the name as 4,5-diethyl-2,2-dimethylheptane.

I'm sorry, I don't understand why it's heptane. I keep drawing it as octane...

I'm gettingC
               C           C
               C-C-C-C-C-C
               C     C    C
               C     C

EDIT: Okay, so I kind of forgot about methylethyl >.< So, I currently have 3, 5 - diethyl, 2,2-dimethylethyl heptane. Where is the 4,5-diethyl coming from? Sorry for being such a pain =/

In the Question(in the starting of the question) count the number of carbon(it is 12 carbon skeleton). But in the above drawn skeleton you have written as 13 carbon!!!
Which one's name do you need?
Check the question again and clarify the correct structure,so that we i can try!

The latest formula you have given makes more sense, there is an extra CH in there, so there are 14 carbons and the name is 4,6-diethyl-2,2-dimethyloctane.
