Naming of ununquadium, ununseptium
« on: June 22, 2010, 03:17:14 AM »
Hello,

Obviously, I'm new here. While my background in chemistry is severely lacking, I still have a deep interest in it, primarily in the fields of food sciences, and the flavor and fragrance industry. Regardless, I still follow what I can.

Last year, element 112, ununbium, was named Copernicium 6 months later, and subsequently approved by the IUPAC,

This year, 2 elements 114 & 117 (names in the thread title) were discovered by JINR in Russia.

However, it has been well over 6 months and no suggested or submitted names have been put forward as far as I can tell.

Does anyone know when name suggestions are expected to be submitted, or what the hold up is? Basically, since no names have been suggested to IUPAC, when can we expect to hear what the new names will be?

Its just sheer childish curiosity and excitement for me to see what they are going to be named. If you ask why I care, that's the reason.

Thank You

The discoverers have a privilege for proposition of name, but after their discovery will be reconfirmed by other labs

Both have been confirmed.

In fact, the confirmation of 117 this year was a HUGE deal because it filled in the last gap on the periodic table. All others had been confirmed. (up to 118)
