Well...ster"ol"s have alcohol groups. This one doesn't...though I'm not sure whether that's the criteria to decide for whether a compound is a sterol or not.

No it's not.  Steroids/sterols have a distinct fused ring system.

That's what I thought.  :D

It kind of reminds of a half of a sterol molecule, doesn't it? Are sterols made from terpenoids in biological pathways, anybody knows?

This is not a steroid. As I recall from my steroids class of years ago, a steroid would contain the tetracyclic unit common to the steroids, cholesterol, ergosterol, estradiol, testosterone, etc.

Sure, it is a useful hint and I would like fakedlunch to take an interest in the biosynthesis of lanosterol from a natural terpene - squalene. This would account for that guess about steroids.
