Matter and Substance

Mass is the quantity of matter in a material.

Total mass remains constant even with reactions of the chemicals.

That’s the law of conservation of mass.

The different states are solids, liquids, plasma and gas.

Solids maintain shape, while liquids and gases quickly change.

The difference is that gases are easy to compress, while liquids ain’t.

Plasma is ionized gas like cathode rays.

A substance, elements and compounds, won’t separate

by physical means,

While a mixture comes apart at the seams;

If many parts can be seen

It is called heterogeneous, but if only one

Then it is called a homogeneous solution.

An element is a substance that cannot be decomposed

into simpler stuff by reactions of the chemicals.

 116 are known.

Two or more bound

by the law of definite proportions,

 is called a compound.
