triphosgene in friedel craft reaction
« on: July 07, 2010, 05:06:25 AM »
Hi all,

i want tu use triphosgene to make a symetrical ketone, through a friedel craft reaction. i was wondering what is the best procedure?
i've planned to do that: the aromatic compound in DCM with aluminium chloride and triethylamine and add dropwise the triphosgene also in DCM
can the triphosgene been mixed with the triethylamine without risk (as the solution to be added dropwise)?

thanks for replying!

Triethylamine is not really necessary. Be aware that you only need 1/3 equivalents of triphosgene per mole starting material since 1 equivalent triphosgene will decompose to 3 equivalents phosgene.
