Why do most transition metals exhibit multiple oxidation states like that of Copper that has a +1 and +2 oxidation states and of Mn with 4 oxidation states? Is it because it would be more stable? If that is the answer, then why?

It's related to the fact that transition metals have electrons filled in their d orbitals.
