Solubility of Compunds in different solvents?
« on: July 23, 2010, 08:27:16 PM »
I was looking on Wiki at different chemicals and I saw that they list whether they are soluble in alcohol and other chemicals.  Is their a list that will give me list to what compound is soluble or not in?  For example, what is sodium hydroxide insoluble in? I would think they would have charts of what it is and isn't soluble in. Help is appreciated. Thanks.

I don't think there's a chart...But for now just go with chemistry old adage "like dissolves like". Polar compound will dissolve in polar solvent and so on.
NaOH is polar and so will not dissolve in organic solvent according to the rule above. And the degree of solubility depends on the compound or solvent in question. Sometime you need to mix two or more solvents to produce a desired solubility.
