important : iron compounds
« on: July 18, 2010, 04:53:12 AM »
iron compounds are well known with their magnetic properties.

in my work i receive deposites of different compounds between them iron compounds.

the problem here that i has different iron compounds as well like Fe2O3 ,FeS, Fe3O4 , FeCO3 ,in different mixing rates and they may be mixed or may be individual  :

FeS alone    or     FeS+FeCO3    or FeS+Fe-oxide    but rarely Fe2O3+FeCO3

all these compounds has its own magnetic properties and magnetic susceptibility value.

my question here is : Is there any method so that i can differentiate between these compounds as qualitative test but by the magnetic propery ?
is this method applicable or not ?

you can test whether there is Fe(produced hardly in solution) or Fe3O4 in the mixtures by the magnetic propery. you can't test other compounds!

Magnetic properties would depend on Composition, presence of moisture and particle size. So in general, the magnetic property is not quite reliable method for chemical analysis. You can use either wet chemistry or XRD

You can use satmagan equipment for magnetit material (Fe3O4) (saturation magnetic analyser) or davis tube.

Fe304=FeO+Fe2O3 (formation magnetit ore)

If you want to test FeS2(Pyrite) or FeCO3(Iron carbonate) .You can use C-S (carbon-sulfur) analyser test equipment.

If you want to test FeO, You must prevent oxidize (FeO). Add V2O5 in iron solution. You can't use HNO3 because acid oxides Fe2 :rarrow: Fe3

but this SATMAGAN; will it analyse Fe3O4 in the mix i mean is it specific for the Fe3O4 ?

it is clear about that but i need   it as simple identification or physical property test suppose the following :
the sample attracted to the magnet strongly ---------> it may be Fe3O4
so i will exclude other Prospects
the sample attracted to the magent Weak ------------> it may be FeS
and so on to  concentrate in one direction
