fractional number as reaction order!
« on: August 24, 2010, 11:06:36 AM »
hi
in some reactions the order is fractional, can you tell me how it is calculated?
for example:

MeCHO (g)----> CH4(g)+CO(g)

rate=k[MeCHO] 3/2

So order of reaction is 3/2 but why?

According to my kinetics book (Chemical Kinetics and Dynamics by Steinfield et al), a fractional reaction order implies that the mechanism for the reaction is complicated.  The mechanism probably consists of several elementary reactions.
