Titration question confusion
« on: September 04, 2010, 03:06:32 AM »
0.5g of a sample containing NaHCO3, NaHCO3 and water is diluted to 250mL
25mL is taken from the sample and then boiled with 50mL HCL
It takes 2.34mL of NaOH of concentration 0.01063M to standardise the excess acid.

A second 25mL is taken from the sample, it was treated with an excess of BaCL2
and 25mL of the base.
7.63 mL was required to titrate the excess base.
Calculate the composition of this sample.

Im a bit confused whats happening.
So by boiling it are we evaporating the water to determine how much of the other compounds are in it?
Then in the second sample we precipitate the carbonates to determine how much water was in the sample?
or is there something more complex going on?
