Saftey Goggles recommendation
« on: September 08, 2010, 06:12:51 PM »
I need goggles for an undergraduate chemistry lab class. I will probably use them beyond that particular class.

I first bought the one "approved" model sold on campus bookstores-- Encon 500 series. I was utterly appalled. The "seal" is cloth lined. I think that's actually worse than having no seal, unless you are just using a power sander or otherwise worried about large particles hitting your eyes. The "Enfog" lens is a joke too. It's perhaps more a safety hazard than anything, because after about 5 minutes of use, I can't even read my instruments. The headband slowly slips out of its loops, and after about 15 minutes it must be readjusted to avoiding the goggles falling off entirely.

In less words, these are probably the cheapest/highest profit margin model that the bookstore could hawk without worrying about a breach of contract involving the implied warranty of fitness for a particular purpose.

So, I am looking for goggles that
* are suitable for protection against chemical splash
* have a clear lens
* have a seal that would keep out liquid (almost exclusively aqueous solutions) better than cotton
* don't fall off the wearer's head without intervention
* don't fog up under typical conditions

A few models that I have considered (it isn't always clear whether they are for chemical splash, so I've just picked some that seal and are vented indirectly)
* Allsafe Monogoggle
* AOSafety Maxim
* Elvex Visionaire, or Legionaire
* Uvex 9305, or Flex Seal

I would appreciate any suggestions about what to buy, or what not to buy.

I use the UVEX Stealth. They're like 9-10 bucks. Great seal, actually comfortable, don't fog.
