Need help confirming some esters and their smells
« on: October 02, 2010, 09:05:53 PM »
I did a an ester lab in my chem class and I am getting mixed info about the smell of the esters that were made. Some of my friends have similar results and others have different results. Here are the 2 reactions that Im not so sure about.

here are the results I got from my experiment with my group:

isobutyl alcohol + butanoic acid = Isobutyl butyrate (banana smell, light red colour)

isoamyl alcohol + acetic acid = Isoamyl Acetate (strong nailpolish remover smell, colourless

What's confusing me is that online it says the isoamyl + acetic acid will create the banana smelling ester. But this isnt what i got from my lab. But others have this result.

If anyone here can confirm or tell me the actual smell of each of the reactions I mentioned above, that would be so great. Because now I don't know which to follow. And I cannot find a smell of isobutyl alcohol + butanoic acid online.
