you would like to consider the functional groups present in methanol and boric acid.

u mean OH in methanol
and COOH in boric acid??

but why?? :S

the reaction is H3BO3 + 3CH3OH ---(H2SO4)---> B(OCH3)3 + 3H2O

yeah that's right... it serves as a catalyst, but what exactly does it do with the boric acid?? i read something about it but couldn't get the right answer.

I think the role of a catalyst is the same ,no matter whether the acid is boric acid or organic acid.
