I'd like to suggest that it be named after William Ramsay, who did so much for the chemistry of the noble gases. I think there is enough jingoism in the periodic table already. So perhaps ramson or ramsayon (Rm)? Other people long overdue for such recognition are Democrit, Dalton, Lavoisier and Berzelius, to mention a few.

If the current chauvinistic practice continues, future generations will look at the bottom of the periodic table and whinge or just laugh at us. I think we ought to spare a thought for the future generations, who hopefully will be wiser than us, and for the image they will have of ourselves.

Yeah... I would agree with you.. Lavoisier, Berzelius, Dalton and Ramsay are people who haven't been given recognition beyond doubt by naming an element after them... They are people who had devoted a huge part of their lives to chemistry (maybe not all of them), but still haven't been given due credit (if that's the right thing to say.
