Net Ionic Equation
« on: November 05, 2010, 02:16:06 PM »
Midterm tomorrow, covered just about everything but never really practiced how to write net ionic equation.

I have 2NaOH+H2SO4--->2H2O+Na2SO4

How do I start writing the net ionic equation?

2Na+ + 2OH- + 2H+ + SO4-2 ----->4H+ + 2O-2 + 2 Na+ + SO4-2

Would this be the correct ionic equation?

I've looked up the answer but still unsure how to arrive at it. I can't find any step by step solution online anywhere either.

Rules for Net Ionic equations:
1. Balance, then write ionic form, then cancel like terms to write net ionic form.
2. do NOT break up polyatomic ions
3. DO break up ionic compounds
4. do NOT break up molecules (often water)
5. do NOT break up solids
6. do NOT break up weak acids/bases (equilibrium reaction is a tipoff not to break up weak acid/base)
