combining two substances with different pH
«

Hi
If I have cow manure with a pH of 8.0 and food waste with a pH of 4.0, and add them together, what is the pH of the new substance. Does it depend on the mass balance? can someone tell me a formula for working this out?
Many Thanks

The pH is the -log [H
+
] in the solution ,so u can calculate the concentration of H
+
in each soln. and you can calculate the pH after adding them together.

No, it is not possible to calculate pH of the mixture without knowing much more about the composition. Both mixtures contain some combination of weak acids and bases, these will act as buffers, resisting pH change.
