How do you dilute this chemical?
« on: January 12, 2011, 10:57:24 PM »
I have a 1mg/L Lead solution that I want to dilute to 0.75, 0.50, and 0.25 mg/L. How much water do I need to add to get to these results? What is the formula?

This is how I thought of it. I want to make 100 mL of each concentration so for 0.75 mg/L I put 25 mL of water and 75 mg/L of the solution.

For 0.50 mg/L, I put 50 mL of water and 50 mL of the solution.

For 0.25 mg/L I put 75 mL of water and 25 mL of the solution.

Is this correct?

If you use this formula it should help:

C1V1=C2V2

Where C1 is the initial concentration, C2 is the desired concentration, and V2 is the desired volume.

Solving for V1 will give the amount of the original solution to use.
