Hydrogen Bonding
« on: September 06, 2005, 01:49:23 AM »
Hi, i have a question. I am conducting an experiment to seperate ethanol from water via fractional distillation, however through calculations i have found that some of the ethanol remains bonded to the water due to the strong hydrogen bonds. Is there any other way of weakening hydrogen bonds other than just simply heating the solution?  ???

At some point you'll get to the purification limit of ethanol by distillation because you'll get azeotropes where the boiling points of the two solutions are the same and therefore unseparable by distillation.
I've got nothin'

You can use molecular sieves to remove the water.
Most Common Suggestions I Make on the Forums.
1. Start by writing a balanced chemical equation.
2. Don't confuse thermodynamic stability with chemical reactivity.
