why is sulfuric acid needed in redox titration
« on: September 09, 2005, 12:14:27 PM »
When we are doing redox titration, why we need to add sulfuric acid to our solution? lets say i want to titrate sodium oxalate(ethanedioate) with potassium manganate(VII), and have to add sulfuric into the oxalate first before doing the titration.

thx in advance!

Write down the chemical equation for us, and it should become clear.  ;)
Most Common Suggestions I Make on the Forums.
1. Start by writing a balanced chemical equation.
2. Don't confuse thermodynamic stability with chemical reactivity.
3. Forum Supports LaTex

H2SO4 is a strong acid and will deliver H(+) which will help to proceed the reaction much faster. Thereby, the sulphate-ions barely react in a redoxreaction.

If we would take HCl for example, the Cl(-) ions can easily take part in a redoxreaction as a reductor.
