Alkenes / Organic Reaction
« on: March 09, 2011, 03:44:09 AM »
Hi all

I am new here, and new to organic chemistry and I am a little stuck. I have taken a screen shot of the type of questions I am stuck on. I by no means want the answers to these questions, all i would like is some guidance on where to start. The first question i do not understand at all, and the second question I do not understand how I would start to solve it. Is it possible someone could point me in the right direction. They are probably really easy, but being new to chemistry I am really stuck  ::)

Thanks in advance  :)

For number 2, start here:

For #1, what do you know about alkyl groups, the inductive effect, and its influence on electron density?
Knowing why you got a question wrong is better than knowing that you got a question right.

Look at the mechanism of addition of HX to an alkene. What are the steps and what intermediates does it proceed through? How might the nature of those intermediates influence the course of the reaction?

Pretty much the same questions for acid catalyzed hydration of an alkene
