Storage of Glacial Acetic Acid in fridge?
« on: March 07, 2011, 03:14:32 AM »
Hi,

I was wondering if I will have any troubles with storing glacial acetic acid in the fridge.

I got a bottle, unopened (glass), and it's going to start getting cold here soon in Melbourne anyway, so figure it should go in the fridge and be stored as a solid.

The fridge isnt used for food, it's just used for storing boxes of film in the garage.

How much does it contract? It wont break the bottle from low pressure?

I dont plan on using it for a while until I get a impact/splash mask and fume hood.

I think it is no need to store it cooled. If the bottle is sealed nothing can happen to store it at room temperature.

Room temp will drop below 16c and rise above it often soon here in Melbourne.

It will freeze and thaw several times..

The glacial acetic acid has not the same behavoiur like water. Even it crystillize its no strong  volumen increase.  So the room can not maintained at 25 ° C with an heating system.

I have had my glacial acetic freeze several times...I keep it next to the window in my kitchen, and in winter when the window is open for ventilation, the acetic would often freeze.

The stuff cleans limescale better than anything  :o

I was just worried about stressing the glass bottle and having it broken, since its sealed/unopened I thought fridge storage would be great since it cant get out atm. :)
