Ideas for next project
« on: April 23, 2011, 06:18:54 PM »
well i recently finished my research project for my own benefit on copper compounds and did an extensive copper to copper lab and am looking for my next project, i am considering making a chlorate cell but the ideal anode/cathode materials are bit pricey for an out of work 17 year old. can you guys provide any suggestions for some interesting research projects

Should we assume you want something more advanced than discussed here

a rough titration shows it to be around 16 M very impure i believe it is some sort of organic compound, i will boil down to increase concentration and see if that helps if not i will try the peroxide method, will report back

I would get a distillation setup and distille it. H2SO4 tends to concentrate in the distillation flask and you get mostly water on the condenser end but seeing that you have 16 M H2SO4, you should get a fair bit of H2SO4 on the condenser end.

What is the peroxide method?

You heat the h2so4 and slowly add 10-15% H2O2 about 8 mL to hopefully oxidize any organic matter.  As for distillation I would do it but I don't wanna risk having it shatter if a drop of water falls in distillatiOn flask. What do you think? I'm relatively new to distillation

The distillation flask would have already hot H2SO4+water so it should not shatter. Also, I used graham condenser when I did it. I would not use a liebig condender for sure.

Ahh I see. That makes more sense. Thanks mate. I'll get to it as soon as I'm done converting this psu into a lab power supply
