Amino acid codes
« on: April 13, 2011, 02:22:40 PM »
My professor gave us this problem:

Translate the following amino acid sequence into one letter code:
Ser-Ala-Val-Glu-Met-Glu-Ile-Met-Thr-Arg-Ala-Pro-Pro-Glu-Asp-Ile-Asn-Ala-Gly-Glu-Asn-Glu.

He gave us an example that
Leu-Glu-Ala-Arg-Asn-Ile-Asn-Gly-Ser-Cys-Ile-Glu-Asn-Cys-Glu-Ile-Ser-Gly-Arg-Glu-Ala-Thr
is:
LEARNINGSCIENCEISGREAT.

However, I have no idea how to do this kind of problem. I would appreciate any advice!  :D

Ignore chemistry, it is just a brain teaser, and not a difficult one.

Hint: is the number of aminoacids and number of letters in the code identical?

The basis for this problem is knowing the single letter designation for all the amino acids.  Glycine can be abbreviated as Gly or G.  Glutamine is abbreviated Gln or Q.  You need to find those single letter designations in your book.
