I'm not in any way a chemist or a student of chemistry, so this may be ignorant, but:
what is the product of n-acetyl-cysteine and sodium bicarbonate and water?  They fizz in the company of each other but not with one of them absent, I assume that indicates a reaction and I assume a reaction indicates biproducts?

The proper chemical name of n-acetyl-cysteine is (R)-2-acetamido-3-sulfanylpropanoic acid.

Now can you see why they should react?
