C3H6OS - thio propanal sulfoxide
« on: May 16, 2011, 04:15:40 AM »
hi all, first of all i'm not a chemistry student, but an engineer. I would like to know whether C3H6OS could be converted to some non-harmful substances by passing it through some chemical reaction ?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

It certainly could react under certain conditions. Can you give us more details as to what conditions its going to be present in?

It causes irritation to eyes. I'm looking for the possible ways to avoid that.
According to my knowledge that's the gas which comes out when onions are cut.

I think what he is looking for is some sort of chemical filter that when passed through disables the active site of the molecule. This issue with that sort of reaction is that it is hard to get molecules to react in the air. A catalytic converter uses heat and high surface area to accomplish such a task. I might be easier to find a filter that supports a media your molecule is highly soluble in.

Not necessarily. I don't want the reaction to take place in air. I just need to know how or with what component similar sought of filter could be attained ? U mentioned about some catalytic converter. That was in general. I'm looking for something specific and precise.

Can a charge flow (current) bring some effect on this compound ?

thank you for your supports.

How is the thiopropanalsulfoxide formulated? In a solution of comes around in gas or?

As gas.
I'm talking about the case when we cut onions.
When we cut them the sulfenic acids combine with the enzymes and gives out the gas. Which when get in contact with water in our eyes forms sulfuric acid. I need to interrupt this phenomenon somewhere.

Might seem a bit impractical, but gasmasks are probably the only solution then...

Or keep the air very moist.

Sounds like you need to inhibit the enzyme somehow. Or engineer onions which don't produce either the enzyme or its substrate.
Individual results may vary
